Hands-Free Capture — Using Siri and Shortcuts with MotionEdge

Why voice control matters on the range

When you're at the range, your hands are on a club — not on your phone. Walking back to the tripod to tap a button between swings breaks your rhythm. MotionEdge lets you start a capture, or pull up what you just recorded, just by asking Siri. The same commands also live in the Shortcuts app, show up in Spotlight search, and the capture command can be assigned to the Action Button so it's one press away.

There are three things you can do by voice:

  • Capture a swing — opens straight into the camera, ready to record
  • Open my last session — jumps to the session with your most recent swing
  • Open my last swing — opens the swing viewer on your most recent swing

How do I capture a swing with my voice?

Say any of these to Siri:

  • "Hey Siri, capture a swing with MotionEdge"
  • "Hey Siri, record my swing with MotionEdge"
  • "Hey Siri, start a swing capture in MotionEdge"

MotionEdge opens directly into the camera in live auto-detect mode, with swing detection already running — so you can step in and hit. (For more on how auto-detect works, see Auto-Detect Sensitivity.)

Can I pick the front or rear camera by voice?

Yes. Name the camera in your phrase:

  • "Hey Siri, capture a swing with the front camera in MotionEdge"
  • "Hey Siri, capture a swing with the rear camera in MotionEdge"

Siri understands a few everyday words for each: "selfie" or "front facing" both mean the front camera; "back" or "main" both mean the rear camera.

One-shot behavior — this is important: choosing a camera by voice applies to that capture only. It does not change the default camera you've set in your capture settings. The next time you open the camera by hand, you're back on your usual setup. If Siri ever asks "which camera?", that's normal — just say Front or Rear.

How do I open my last session?

Say any of these:

  • "Hey Siri, open my last session in MotionEdge"
  • "Hey Siri, open up my last session in MotionEdge"
  • "Hey Siri, show my last session in MotionEdge"

MotionEdge opens the session that contains your most recently added swing — handy for reviewing everything you just hit without tapping through the app.

How do I open my last swing?

Say either of these:

  • "Hey Siri, open my last swing in MotionEdge"
  • "Hey Siri, show my last swing in MotionEdge"

MotionEdge opens the swing viewer on your most recently added swing that has video, so there's always footage to look at. (Watch-only or data-only entries are skipped — it goes to the last swing you can actually watch.)

Do I have to say "MotionEdge" in the command?

Yes. Siri needs the app name to know where to send the request, so include "in MotionEdge" or "with MotionEdge" in the phrase. A bare "capture a swing" won't trigger it. Think of "MotionEdge" as the part that tells Siri who you're talking to.

How do I put Capture a Swing on the Action Button?

On iPhone 15 Pro and later, you can assign Capture a Swing to the Action Button — the fastest way to start recording at the range without unlocking and hunting for the app.

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap Action Button
  3. Swipe to the Shortcut option
  4. Tap Choose a Shortcut
  5. Select MotionEdgeCapture a Swing

Now a press of the Action Button drops you straight into the camera, ready to detect your next swing.

Where do these show up besides Siri?

The same three commands are available without speaking:

  • Shortcuts app — open the Shortcuts app, tap the search field, and search "MotionEdge." You'll see Capture a Swing, Open My Last Session, and Open My Last Swing. You can run them directly or build them into your own multi-step shortcuts and automations.
  • Spotlight search — swipe down on your Home Screen to open Spotlight, then start typing "capture a swing" (or "last swing" / "last session"). The MotionEdge action appears in the results — tap to run it.

Siri doesn't recognize the commands yet — what do I do?

After you update or install the app, give Siri a short moment to learn the new commands — the system indexes them in the background, and they may not respond in the first minute or two. If a command still isn't recognized after that:

  • Make sure you included the app name ("...in MotionEdge")
  • Try one of the exact phrases listed above
  • Confirm Siri is enabled in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri (called Siri & Search on older iOS versions)
  • Open MotionEdge once after updating, then try again — opening the app helps the system register its commands

Which devices support this?

Siri voice commands, the Action Button assignment, Shortcuts, and Spotlight are all iPhone and iPad (iOS) features. They are not available on the Mac version of MotionEdge.
