Comment Display Names — iCloud Name & Custom Override
How does MotionEdge decide what name to show on my comments?
When you comment on a shared session, MotionEdge needs a name to display alongside your comment. It pulls your name from your iCloud profile — the same name that appears in Settings > Apple ID on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
This happens automatically the first time you enable iCloud sync in MotionEdge. The app reads your name from your Apple ID and uses it as your comment display name across all shared sessions.
What if my iCloud name isn't what I want to show?
You can override it. MotionEdge has a per-device display name setting that lets you choose exactly what name appears on your comments.
To change it:
- Open Settings in MotionEdge
- Tap iCloud Sync
- Under Comment Display Name, you'll see two options:
- Use iCloud Name — shows the name from your Apple ID (e.g., "Dwain Kinghorn")
- Use Custom Name — lets you type whatever name you want
If you choose "Use Custom Name," type the name you want others to see and you're done. Every new comment you post from that device will use your custom name.
Is the custom name override per device or per account?
Per device. Each iPhone, iPad, and Mac can have its own display name setting. This is stored locally on the device, not synced through iCloud.
This means:
- Your iPhone could show "Dwain" while your iPad shows "Dwain K."
- If you set up a new device, it starts with your iCloud name until you change it
- Wiping a device or reinstalling the app resets to the iCloud default
For most people, the iCloud name is perfect and you never need to think about it. The override is there if you want a shorter name, a nickname, or something different on a specific device.
Can other people in a shared session see my display name setting?
They see the result — the name that appears on your comments — but not your setting. They can't tell whether you're using your iCloud name or a custom override. It just looks like your name.
What if I change my name in my Apple ID settings?
If you're using the "Use iCloud Name" option, MotionEdge will pick up the new name the next time it refreshes your identity (typically on app launch or when toggling iCloud sync). New comments will use the updated name. Previous comments keep the name they were posted with.
