Collections — How Sharing Works
A collection is the folder you own. Sessions live in it. Swings live in those sessions. You share the collection, not one session at a time — invite a coach, a student, or a playing partner once, and they see what is in that collection as you add to it.
Collections are in MotionEdge 2.1 and later. On 1.0.1, sharing is still one session at a time. Update to 2.1 (or newer) for this model.
You need MotionEdge Pro both to share a collection and to join one someone shared with you. Sign in with Apple is how MotionEdge knows who you are.
Which version of MotionEdge is this for?
MotionEdge 2.1 and later, on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If Move to Collection, Share Collection, or a My Swings header are not in the app, you are on an earlier build — this article does not describe that version.
What's a collection?
Three nested things:
- A collection holds sessions. My Swings is the one you already have. You can make more — a coach, a playing partner, this winter's lessons.
- A session is still a practice block: a range day, a lesson, a Saturday on the course. It lives in exactly one collection.
- A swing lives in exactly one session. You can move it to another session in the same collection, or into a session that lives in a different collection.
With one collection and nothing shared, the Sessions list looks the way it always did — no extra header. Headers appear when you have more than one collection, or when someone has shared with you. Shared-with-you collections sit last, with the owner's name.
A collection can be empty. Capturing or importing into it creates a session there, the way capture always has.
What do I share?
The collection. Everyone you invite sees everything in it: sessions, swings, videos, measurements, comments, and coaching notes stored with those swings, plus the names of everyone else in it.
They do not see your other collections, your golfer profile, or your account.
There is no per-session hide. If you do not want someone to see a session, it does not belong in a collection they are in. Keep it in My Swings, or move it into a collection you have not shared.
People without MotionEdge still get a file from review — a still, a screen recording, or a .mef session file. That is not membership. Membership is the live collection.
Who can see what?
When you invite, you choose what they can do:
| They can | In the app | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| View | View only on the member list | See everything in the collection, including everyone's comments. They cannot add swings or comment. |
| Add swings | Can add swings | See everything, add their own swings, and comment. |
You are the Owner. You can also make someone an Administrator so they can invite and remove people the way you can.
A viewer cannot capture or import into that collection, cannot comment, and Move to Collection will not offer it as a destination. A person who can add swings can do all three. If you want your coach to write notes on your swings, invite them with Add swings.
How do I keep something private?
Move it.
- Move the session into My Swings or another collection they are not in. The whole day of work changes who can see it.
- Or move one swing into a session that already lives in a private collection.
That is the privacy tool. Sharing a collection shares all of it.
How do I move a session into another collection?
- Open the session.
- Tap ⋯ and choose Move to Collection.
- Pick a collection you can add to.
Only collections you can write into are listed — your own, and shared collections where you can add swings. A collection you can only view is not offered.
You can also create the destination first: + → New Collection, give it a name, and choose Start with → Move sessions here or Nothing. Sharing is a later choice, not part of creating.
Between collections you can write into, this is a real move: the session leaves the old collection and arrives in the new one. It is not a copy.
How do I move a swing into another session?
- From All Swings or Home, choose the swing (or several).
- Open Move to….
- Pick the destination session. Sessions are grouped under their collection, so two rows that both read "Sep 3 — iPad" stay distinct.
New Session from that sheet lands in the collection the swings already live in, unless you pick a different one. The safe default is the one you get by tapping through without reading: a swing in a shared collection stays visible to that collection's members.
If that was the last swing in the old session, the empty session is removed. That is intended.
What happens if I move a swing into a different collection?
Who can see that swing changes.
- A move inside one collection is filing. The app does not ask again.
- A move across collections asks first, and it names people: Karen will no longer see this swing. Alta will be able to see it. If neither collection has anyone in it, the confirmation just says the swing is leaving one collection and entering the other.
Confirm with Move, or Keep Where It Is.
If you cannot add to the destination — it is not yours, and you are not a contributor there — you Save a copy instead. The original stays where it is; the copy lands in your own collection.
How do I invite someone?
- Open the collection.
- Open Collection Options… (the ⋯ on the collection).
- Tap Share Collection. (If you see Turn on Sync to share instead, turn on Sync in Settings first — collections are shared through iCloud.)
- The standard share sheet opens. Choose whether they can view or also add swings, then send the invitation — usually as a text message, though Mail and AirDrop work too.
Only the people you invite can use the invitation. There is no public link.
They tap the invitation, sign in with Apple, and join. They need MotionEdge Pro to join, the same as you need Pro to share, and they need Sync turned on too. A family member who already has Pro through Apple Family Sharing can join on their own sign-in.
If you invite someone to three collections, that is three invitations — each collection is shared on its own.
You can remove anyone at any time. They can leave.
What if they leave, or I remove them?
Access ends right away.
They keep a copy of every swing they added themselves, in their own collection. Copies of your swings come off their devices the next time the app runs.
Swings they added that were in Recently Deleted stay recoverable for them, into their own collection.
Who can delete swings in a shared collection?
In MotionEdge 2.2 and later: the Owner and Administrators can delete any swing. Someone who can add swings can delete only the swings they added. Someone who can only view can't delete. A deleted swing is gone for everyone and stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days; recovering it puts it back for everyone. Full detail: Recently Deleted.
What if I delete the whole collection?
If you delete a shared collection, everyone in it loses access, and everything in that collection is deleted. That cannot be undone. Move out anything you want to keep first.
If you delete your MotionEdge account, people in collections you own lose access too. The app warns you with a count before you confirm.
What if they don't have MotionEdge?
Send a file, not an invitation.
- Share this frame — a still of this playhead
- Screen recording — you talking over the swing, plays anywhere
- A .mef file — the whole session, for someone who does use MotionEdge but is not in the collection
An invitation is for someone who will open the live collection on their own devices.
What changed if I used shared sessions before?
In 1.0 you shared one session at a time. Every new range day was another share.
From 2.1, you invite people into a collection once. New sessions you add there are already shared. Sessions you want to keep to yourself stay in My Swings or another collection you have not shared.
Existing 1.0 shared sessions keep working until you update. After you update, new sharing happens through collections.
