MotionEdge Pro — What's in the Free Tier and What You Unlock with Pro
MotionEdge is free out of the box, and the free tier is a real coaching tool — not a hollow demo. You can capture swings, review them frame by frame with the full pose skeleton, draw lines and angles on the video, compare swings side by side, track hand path, use your Apple Watch as a swing trigger and Tempo Trainer metronome, and a lot more. Most of the app is free.
Six features sit behind MotionEdge Pro. They're the ones that connect to outside hardware (TrackMan, paired iPhones), keep your data in the cloud across your devices, or talk to an AI coach about your swing. Going Pro turns the app from a single-device practice tool into the full multi-device, AI-coached, launch-monitor-connected setup it's designed to be.
A 7-day free trial is included so you can try every Pro feature before you decide.
What's in the free tier
Almost everything in MotionEdge is free, including:
- Capture — auto-detect swing recording, manual recording, Quick Review, Full Review, screen recording, all camera lens controls, manual shutter and ISO, cinematic stabilization
- Apple Watch — camera trigger, swing detection, Tempo Trainer metronome, per-swing environmental data (altitude, temperature, conditions)
- Pose & overlays — full pose skeleton, setup overlay, shaft and clubhead tracking
- Swing Review checks — Posture Check (spine tilt and hip depth), Shaft Check, and Hand Path grade, each read on your own frames
- Drawing tools — line, arrow, angle, horizontal angle, circle, freehand — all colors, all widths, saved with each swing
- Filmstrip — 10-key-position swing breakdown, frame nudging, side-by-side comparison filmstrips
- Multi-panel review — single, split, and quad panel layouts across video, filmstrip, metrics, and overlays
- Swing comparison — compare up to 10 swings in single-frame, filmstrip, posture, or video layouts
- Sessions & organization — sessions, tags, swing groups, GHIN handicap lookup
- Sharing via .mef file — export a complete session as a MotionEdge File and share it with anyone via AirDrop, email, or any file-sharing service
A lot of things competitors put behind their paid tier — drawing tools, comparison, multi-panel review, Shaft Check, Apple Watch — are free in MotionEdge. The free tier is the real product.
What Pro unlocks
1. Full swing library (no free-tier cap)
Free tier: You can keep up to 25 swings active in MotionEdge at any one time. When you go to save the 26th, you'll see a prompt to either upgrade or delete a swing to make room. Swings in Recently Deleted don't count toward the limit — only active swings do. Recently Deleted itself is free; with Pro and Sync it covers all your devices (Recently Deleted).
With Pro: No cap. Keep every swing you've ever recorded.
This matters once you start building a real practice history. Comparing today's swing to one from three months ago, building up a library of pro reference swings to study against your own — all of that needs more than 25 swings.
2. Unlimited daily saves
Free tier: You can save up to 10 swings per day from live capture (camera on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, plus Apple Watch swings). Imports from your Photo Library, Files, or other sources don't count toward this daily limit — they're separate. The daily counter resets at midnight in your local time zone.
With Pro: Save as many swings per day as you want.
If you're at the range hitting a full bucket, ten captures fills up quickly. Pro lets you record a full session without watching the count.
3. TrackMan integration
Free tier: TrackMan integration is Pro-only. The buttons for it are visible in the Import menu and on the camera screen — tapping any of them shows the Pro upgrade prompt.
With Pro: All three TrackMan flows unlock:
- Import a TrackMan stroke file (.tms) — export from TrackMan Performance Studio, import into MotionEdge. Every shot in the file becomes a swing with full radar data attached.
- Import a TrackMan Report link — paste a shared TrackMan report URL and pull in the shot data with no file transfer.
- Connect live to a TrackMan — pair your device with a TrackMan unit on the same network and capture video plus radar data in real time, every swing automatically paired.
Once TrackMan data is attached to a swing, the TrackMan Data panel in the Swing Viewer shows ball speed, launch angle, spin, club path, face angle, carry, and the full radar set. Combined with the pose skeleton and overlays, this is what turns "I think I came over the top" into "I came 4° over the top with the face 2° open — that's why it went right."
4. Remote Camera (multi-device capture)
Free tier: Remote Camera is Pro-only. The "Manage Cameras…" and "Go Remote (this device)" menu items are visible on the camera screen — tapping either shows the Pro upgrade prompt.
With Pro: Pair iPhones as remote cameras controlled from an iPad or Mac:
- Put an iPhone on a tripod down-the-line, hold the iPad in front of you — start, stop, and review swings from the iPad without ever walking back to the tripod
- Pair two remote cameras for simultaneous face-on and down-the-line capture, automatically grouped on the same swing
- Use a Mac as the director for the largest review canvas
This sounds incremental until you use it. Solo range sessions stop being a constant walk to and from the tripod.
5. iCloud sync and shared collections
Free tier: The Sync toggle is visible in Settings → Sync & Sharing — tapping it shows the Pro upgrade prompt. You can still move sessions between your own devices using the free .mef export and import.
With Pro: Automatic background sync of every session, swing, video, comment, and AI conversation across all of your devices on the same iCloud account — iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Plus the ability to share a collection with another person — your coach, a playing partner, a friend — and exchange comments on individual swings. Their comments appear on your device, yours appear on theirs. Creating collections is free; sharing one is Pro, and so is joining one someone shared with you. See Collections — How Sharing Works.
Sync runs through your own iCloud account, so there's nothing extra to set up for syncing your own devices.
6. The AI Coach
Free tier: AI Coach is Pro-only. New users get a 7-day free trial of MotionEdge Pro to try the full AI Coach experience. After the trial ends, AI Coach access ends unless you continue with a paid subscription.
With Pro: The free Swing Review checks are what you read yourself. The AI Coach is the full analysis of the swing, with the coach's recommendations on top:
- Rules — every measured check of this swing, with the numbers behind each one
- Your key focus — the one thing those rules add up to, with its steps shown on the frames where they happen
- Pro norms — where this swing sits against tour players: inside, at the edge, or outside the tour range
- The coach's recommendations — what to feel, a drill, and what to record next, plus a Coach's Corner lesson for the area that needs the work
- The conversation — ask a follow-up and it starts from that review, so the coach is talking about this swing
The Rules, your key focus, and Pro norms are worked out on your device. When the coach writes its reply, it draws on that review plus the swing's frames, pose and measurements. It also uses your TrackMan and Apple Watch data when present, your golfer profile, and the swings you have reviewed with it before. See AI Coach — How It Works.
Pro includes a monthly allowance of AI Coach conversations that resets each month. If you need more in a given stretch — heavy AI Coach use, swing change cycles, multi-swing comparisons — you can purchase an AI Coach Pack from Settings → MotionEdge Pro to extend beyond the monthly quota. Packs are one-time purchases (not a subscription), valid for one year from the date of purchase, and only spent after your monthly quota runs out. See AI Coach Packs — How They Work and When to Buy One for the full mechanics.
How to start the 7-day free trial
The free trial unlocks every Pro feature for 7 days. You can start it from any of the Pro upgrade prompts that appear when you tap a gated feature, or by tapping Subscribe in Settings → MotionEdge Pro.
On day 7, the trial converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before then. You can check your status, see exactly how many days are left, and cancel — all from Settings → MotionEdge Pro, without leaving the app. See Managing Your MotionEdge Pro Subscription for the full walkthrough.
The 7-day trial is a one-time offer per Apple Account.
What happens to my data if my trial ends or I cancel?
In MotionEdge 2.2 and later, nothing of yours is deleted, on your devices or in iCloud. You keep:
- All your swings — every video on your device, all pose data, all metrics, all drawings, all overlays
- All your TrackMan data — radar data attached to your swings stays attached and visible (new TrackMan imports are paused)
- Everything already on each device — anything that synced to a device before Pro ended stays there
What changes when Pro ends:
- iCloud sync turns off on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, so new swings and edits stop syncing between your devices. Changes you make while Pro is off wait on the device and sync when you subscribe again. Settings shows Subscribe to sync again under the sync switch.
- Videos you stored only in your own iCloud stay downloadable for 90 days. If some of your videos are kept only in iCloud to save space on a device (iCloud storage optimization), open one to download it, or tap Download all. A banner in your library shows how many are left and the date to download them by. If you've already allowed notifications for MotionEdge, you'll get a reminder 30, 7, and 1 day before that date. After 90 days those videos show Video in iCloud (Pro) and need Pro to download. They stay in your iCloud and aren't deleted.
- Collections other people shared with you leave your Collections list while you don't have Pro. Your swings in them are not deleted.
- If those videos are already on this device, they become copies in My Swings, and swings other people added come off this device.
- If some of your videos are still only in the owner's iCloud, MotionEdge tries to download them for up to 90 days. Until that finishes, nothing is copied out and other people's swings stay on this device. You don't see the collection during that wait.
- When the downloads finish, or when the 90 days are up, your swings become copies in My Swings. A video that never downloaded shows Video Unavailable. It is still in the owner's iCloud and is not deleted. It does not show Video in iCloud (Pro) — that label is only for a video in your own iCloud.
- Their collection does not change. You stay invited. Subscribe again while they are still sharing it and the collection comes back. The copies in My Swings fold back in, so you don't keep two of the same swing. If they have stopped sharing, those copies stay in My Swings.
- Collections you share do not stop the day Pro ends. The app says Your MotionEdge Pro has ended, and Collections you share will stop being shared on the date it shows. That date is at least 7 days after this device first sees that Pro has ended, so you always get the warning. Tap Renew Pro before that date to keep sharing. Your swings stay in your library. Until sharing stops, the collection can be read-only: This collection is read-only until MotionEdge Pro is active again. Nothing has been deleted — everyone can still see everything in it. People you invited can still see everything in it, and new swings wait until Pro is active again. After sharing stops, each of their devices keeps the swings they added, the same way as a collection they had joined.
- New TrackMan imports and live connections are paused
- New Remote Camera pairings are paused
- AI Coach access ends
- The 25-active-swing limit and 10-saves-per-day live capture limit come back
You're never locked out of the app or your data. The free tier is the default; Pro adds on top of it. If you subscribe again later, the Pro features turn back on with all of your data intact. If sync was on when Pro ended, it turns back on by itself. A collection you had joined comes back if its owner is still sharing it, and copies saved into My Swings fold back into it.
Sharing Pro with your family
One Pro subscription can cover up to six members of your household through Apple Family Sharing — at no extra cost. Every Pro feature unlocks on every family member's own devices, and your AI Coach credits (plus any AI Coach Packs you buy) pool across the family so the whole household genuinely shares one monthly fee. See Practicing Golf as a Family for the full setup and how to combine it with shared collections for a parent-and-kid workflow.
