Free vs Pro

What Works Offline and Without Pro

The short version:

Everything that analyzes your swing runs on your device. It works with no signal, and it's free.

MotionEdge Pro buys the things that have to reach outside your phone — other hardware, the cloud, or an AI. If a feature never leaves your device, it doesn't need a subscription and it doesn't need a connection.

That means a driving range bay with one bar of signal, an indoor sim with guest Wi-Fi you never bothered joining, or a plane at 35,000 feet are all fine for the core of the app. Record a swing, get the ten positions, check your posture, grade your hand path, compare it against last week — none of that asks the network for anything.

Read the pattern down the two right-hand columns: the free column and the no-connection column are almost the same list. That isn't a coincidence — it's the same design decision seen from two angles.

Why the analysis is local

Pose data is computed on your device by MotionEdge's pose-estimation engine. Your video doesn't have to leave your phone for any of it to work, which has three consequences worth knowing:

  • No spinner, no queue. The swing is analyzed by the time you look down at the screen. There's no upload step and nothing to wait behind.
  • No signal required. Range bays, indoor sims, and remote courses are usually where connectivity is worst and practice is best.
  • Nothing to leak. Your swing videos aren't sitting on someone else's server for the analysis to happen.

See Pose Overlays and Posture Check for what each overlay and number actually means.

Two features that break the pattern

Remote Camera and TrackMan live need a network, but not the internet.

Both pair devices over a local network. A home or facility Wi-Fi works, and so does an iPhone hotspot with no internet service behind it at all — which is the normal setup at an outdoor range. You are not sending anything to a server; the devices are talking to each other. Setup details: Remote Camera Setup.

GHIN handicap lookup is free but does need the internet.

It's the one free feature that reaches outside your phone, because it signs in to the GHIN service to fetch your rounds. Everything else in the free tier is entirely local.

What the free tier does cap

The free tier is not time-limited and not a demo, but two limits are worth knowing before you plan around it:

  • 25 active swings in your library at once. Swings in the Recycle Bin don't count.
  • 10 saves per day from live capture. Imports from your Photo Library or Files don't count toward this.

Neither limit has anything to do with being offline — they apply with or without a connection. Full breakdown: MotionEdge Pro — Free Tier vs Pro.

What happens to Pro features when you lose signal

They degrade rather than break:

  • iCloud Sync queues up and catches up when you reconnect. Keep recording; nothing is lost.
  • AI Coach is the one feature that genuinely cannot run without the internet — it needs to reach the coaching service. You'll get a clear message rather than a hang. See AI Coach Connection Problems.
  • TrackMan file import keeps working offline; only the report-link flow needs a connection, because the link is hosted on TrackMan's servers.

So even on a fully offline day with Pro, you lose the AI conversation and live sync — the entire capture-and-analyze loop is untouched.

A note on "offline" and the Apple Watch

In Apple Watch Modes you'll see a "Works offline?" row. That table means something different: it's asking whether a Watch mode works without your iPhone nearby, not whether it works without internet. No Apple Watch feature in MotionEdge needs an internet connection.
