iCloud Sync — How It Works

Capture on your iPhone at the range, walk inside, and review the same swings on your iPad or Mac — already there, already analyzed, nothing to transfer. That's iCloud Sync. It keeps your entire MotionEdge library in step across every device you sign into with the same Apple Account.

What is iCloud Sync?

iCloud Sync continuously and automatically keeps your swings, sessions, and everything attached to them mirrored across all your devices. Record on one device and it appears on the others within moments — no cables, no exports, no manual upload. It runs quietly in the background whenever the app is open and you have a connection.

iCloud Sync is a MotionEdge Pro feature. You can see the toggle on the free tier — tapping it shows the upgrade prompt — and you can always move sessions between your own devices for free with .mef export.

What syncs across my devices?

Effectively your whole library:

  • Sessions and swings — the full structure of your library
  • Videos — the actual swing clips (with an option to keep older ones in iCloud only; see below)
  • All measurements — pose data, swing positions, spine tilt, hand path, tempo, kinematic sequence
  • TrackMan data — radar numbers paired with each swing
  • Drawings, annotations, tags, and comments
  • Apple Watch data and AI Coach conversation history

In short: if it's part of a swing, it travels with the swing.

How do I turn it on?

Go to Settings → iCloud Sync and flip iCloud Sync on. As long as you're signed into iCloud on the device, that's all there is to it — the first sync starts in the background and your library begins propagating to your other devices.

Do I need a MotionEdge account?

No. Sync is built on Apple's CloudKit, so your iCloud sign-in is the account — there's nothing separate to create and no password to manage. Your data lives in your own private iCloud, tied to your Apple Account.

Capture on one device, review on another

This is the workflow iCloud Sync is built for:

  • iPhone on the tripod captures swings at the range.
  • iPad or Mac — already showing those swings moments later — is where you sit down to review, draw, and talk to the AI Coach.

Because everything syncs, it doesn't matter which device you pick up next. Edits you make on one (a trim, a drawing, a comment) flow back to the others.

Can I share a session with someone else?

Yes — iCloud Sync also powers shared sessions. Give a coach, a playing partner, or a friend access to a session and you can exchange comments on individual swings: theirs appear on your device, yours on theirs. There's a small, expected delay on the owner's side for participants' edits — see Shared Session Update Timing — and how your name shows up on those comments is covered in Comment Display Names.

Does it fill up my device?

Only as much as you want. With Sync on, you can also enable Optimize Local Storage, which keeps recent and active swings on the device and parks older videos in iCloud — downloading any one back the instant you tap it. The measurements, filmstrips, and thumbnails always stay local, so the app feels the same either way. Full details: Optimize Local Storage.

What happens if I turn Sync off — or my Pro trial ends?

Nothing already on your device disappears. Everything that synced down stays put; new syncing simply stops. The one case MotionEdge handles carefully is if you have videos stored in iCloud only (via Optimize Local Storage) when you turn Sync off — it offers to download them all back first so you don't lose anything, and won't let them go silently. That safeguard is described in Optimize Local Storage.

Is my data private?

Yes. Sync uses your private iCloud database through Apple's CloudKit — the same system that backs Apple's own apps. Your swings aren't stored on a MotionEdge server, and a session is only ever visible to someone else if you explicitly share it with them.
